Colwood taxpayers should be celebrating their narrow escape from the Seaterra monster. Perhaps a parade is in order.
Seaterra, of course, is the $783-million bureaucratic behemoth of a sewage treatment plant planned by the Capital Regional District. (Actually, the plant will cost at least $830.4 million, according to our independent analysis, but we digress.)
On Wednesday, Colwood received permission to get out of Seaterra and study a plan that would let them build their own, cheaper sewage treatment facility. Frankly, the entire CRD plan should be shelved until we see what Colwood can come up with – smaller may be cheaper.
According to our independent analysis, prepared by CPA Sacha Peter, Colwood’s exit means Saanich, Victoria, Langford, View Royal, Oak Bay and Esquimalt taxpayers will see another 4.5 per cent increase on top of the rest of the hikes needed to fund Seaterra. Hopefully their politicians wise up and follow the Colwood crawl out of this dumb plan.
